The sun and smiles shined brightly as hundreds turned up at Ben & Jerry's Thursday for ice cream, face painting and balloons for the Sidewalk Carnival to benefit the HFA's 2nd Annual Lose the Training Wheels Bike Camp.
Sibel Berberoglu, owner of the Hoboken Ben & Jerry's, hosted the benefit that provided 20% of sales for the night to the camp. Ben & Jerry's, along with the City of Hoboken, Clearview Cinema, Coca-Cola, h-Mag, Hoboken Harriers, Litzky Public Relations, Macy's, Orlando Physical Therapy and WPLJ are sponsors for the camp. The night raised $500 for the camp. But more importantly the event raised awareness for the camp and the importance of providing an opportunity for children with disabilities to achieve a milestone that comes easily for many children.
Lose the Training Wheels has an 80% success rate in teaching children with disabilities to ride a bike in five days. Families may struggle for years unsuccessfully to teach their children to ride a bike. But adaptive equipment and the help of two certified bike technicians help advance camp participants through the program to learn to ride in just a week.
