  • Summer Option for Older Kids

The Early College Preparation Programs at NJIT's Center for Pre-College Programs offers a series of summer programs for academically talented students from post-fourth to post-eleventh grades. The programs are designed to encourage students to pursue and successfully complete education in science, mathematics, engineering and technological fields.

  • Cabin Fever Festival, Sunday March 1, 2009

    Cabin Fever is approaching… expect to see great local entertainment and excellent raffle prizes. This year we will have the Baby Lounge hopping with Puppetonia, Baby Ole, Romparoo, Traveling Tumblers and the Movement Center. The Sound Stage downstairs will have dancing with Louie Miranda, Garden Street Music, Monroe Street Movement Space and the Fuzzy Lemons. Check the fliers and our website for specific times.

    Expect Arts and Crafts, Little Detectives Computer Demonstrations, Garden Street Music Instrument Introductions, HUMC Infant CPR Demos, Climbing Castle from Symposia, Balancing from Little Gym, Cookies from the Girl Scouts and a Photo Booth sponsored by Hoboken Pediatrics, plus so much more. There will be entertainment for all ages!

    Besides all the fun, Cabin Fever is a time to see your membership dollars at work. We will be awarding 5 local charities with $10,000 in grants – our largest amount yet. Distribution will be at 12:30 on the Sound Stage.

    Food and Beverages will be available through the Elks Lodge downstairs.

    Strollers MUST be parked outside so please be prepared with locks and your Bjorn.

    Please join us…. as in the past, HFA Members will be free but feel free to invite friends and family. A nominal $20 charge per family will apply. (We will waive the entrance fee for those that elect to enroll in the HFA at Cabin Fever)

  • New Moms Lunch at Bin 14/ Kids Eat Free at Elysian

    Every Wednesday at BIN 14 Trattoria Wine Bar, there is a lunch promotion for new moms; lunch special $10 per person + tax & gratuity which includes a choice of a  small salad and a pizza.

    On Tuesdays Kids Eat Free at the Elysian Cafe all night. With the purchase of any adult entree, up to two children (age 12 and under) per adult can choose dinner from the kid's menu.

    Our Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten program is filled with fun and creative activities. This summer our theme is RHYTHM! Each day they will have dance, art, creative drama, singing time and organized outdoor play.

    Each Friday during the last half hour, they will share their accomplishments with family and friends.

    Children bring their own snack.

    This is going to be a very fun and exciting SummerStage! We are mounting the junior version of Thoroughly Modern Millie, tapping and all!

    Grades 1 and 2 will learn several of the scenes and musical numbers from the show to be performed at the end of the three week session for family and friends.

    Grades 3 through 10 will put on Thoroughly Modern Millie Junior, the modified version of the Tony award winning musical. They will learn blocking, direction, acting technique and choreography with an added emphasis on tap. At the end of the three week session they will perform a fully realized production for family and friends.

    Each day all participants grades 1 - 9 will enjoy classes in Theater Games, Art, Voice and Dance with trained professionals and working artists. There are opportunities to work on costumes, set pieces and programs. Snack and “Musical Movie” Lunch are part of the day as well. Grades 1 and 2 will have supervised Outdoor Playtime, weather permitting.

    Children bring their own snack, lunch and tap shoes.

  • Pedestrian Safety in Hoboken

    The following is a letter to the Hoboken Reporter by our Director of Community Affairs, Laura Burkhart, regarding pedestrian safety initiatives in Hoboken.

    Dear Editor,

    One of the things we love about Hoboken is that it is a walking town.  We
    can walk to our schools, parks, restaurants, and shops.  We would like to
    sincerely thank the public officials who are working to support safety in
    our walking community.

    First, the Hoboken City Council, especially the Parking & Transportation
    Committee -- Councilman Peter Cunningham, Councilwoman Terry LaBruno, and
    Councilwoman Dawn Zimmer -- launched an initiative to install stanchions at
    many of our City's intersections.  The stanchions, which prevent
    illegally-parked cars from blocking pedestrians' and motorists' sight-lines
    at intersections, have greatly enhanced the safety of our streets.

    Second, the Hoboken Police Department, especially Lieutenants Misculin and
    Wehrhhan are implementing a state-funded program for greater enforcement of
    traffic laws.

    And, finally, Mr. John Correa and the entire Hoboken Parking Utility
    routinely patrol the streets to enforce parking restrictions that promote
    safety and deter cars from parking in unsafe manners.

    We believe that further work is necessary: we need walk/don't walk signals
    on Washington Street and even greater enforcement of stop-sign and speeding
    traffic violations.  However, we are happy that our public servants are
    working to promote the safety of our streets.

  • Philanthropy Drive Success

    Thank you to everyone who participated in the Pajama Program & Warm Clothing Drive. We received hundreds of item to help keep our local children warm & toasty during this winter season! Many thanks to our drop off location sponsors: Club H, NY Sports Clubs & Primetime Learning Center

    In fact, the drive was so successful that Primetime Learning Center has decided to be a drop off location throughout the year for future children's clothing donations. So if you wish to donate new or used children’s clothing for any season, please consider dropping them off at:

  • Cabin Fever Festival, March 1st

    The HFA was put together about 10 years ago as a means to organize parents, children and families within town - it started out as a simple spreadsheet of a few local moms and has grown into over 400 families. Besides organizing parents and children we have also taken on projects and charities in town that are family friendly. For the last several years we have helped to support monthly programs at the Jubilee Center and annually we have given out grants to local charities to help with specific projects, last year we awarded money to Hudson CASA for support of foster children, the Jubilee Center for camp programs and Hudson Cradle for newborn care.

    We use our large Cabin Fever event (scheduled this year for March 1st) as a chance to connect with members and to award the chosen charities with grants. We are looking for people that might be interested in helping to organize and put together the event for 2009. The event usually produces a large gathering and is hosted at the Elks Club on Washington Street. During the event we host several sessions of entertainment that range in age appropriateness, it is a perfect opportunity for you to review classes that are in town, see demos and to determine what your child might prefer best, we do arts and crafts, photo stations, etc..... as in the past the event will be free for existing members of the HFA. A nominal admittance fee will be charged for non-HFA families, with an option to join the HFA and get free admittance.

    In addition to all the entertainments, demos, etc.... we will also have a raffle for many wonderful prizes. The prizes range from spa services, gym memberships, birthday parties, class packages, etc..... as you can imagine contacting the vendors, coordinating with pick up of items, preparing them for distribution and then contacting winners, etc.... can be a huge undertaking. I am looking for a few members that would be interested in helping to work on this part of the event... in the past we have been able to recruit enough people that you would only be responsible for short list of vendors/stores to contact. We are also looking for raffle prizes, if you have a prize that you would like to donate please contact me directly.

    The event itself also requires that we have several volunteers available for helping to maintain the raffle section, safety patrol, entertainment scheduling, set up and clean up.
