  • “Fortune” Comes to Symposia Bookstore

FORTUNE COMES TO SYMPOSIA BOOKSTORE on Friday, March 24th at 7:30pm.

In the summer of 2014, playwright George Cameron Grant visited the sleepy town of Annapolis Royal in Nova Scotia on a much needed vacation. Instead, during a candlelight graveyard tour, he found himself standing before an unmarked grave, learning about the most unforgettable woman he had ever encountered, Black Loyalist Rose Fortune.

On Friday, March 24th at 7:30pm, Mr. Grant brings to Symposia Bookstore the story of this encounter, his ensuing mission to write the play FORTUNE about this extraordinary woman to bring her remarkable story of tenacity and courage to the world, and to lead a crusade to place a memorial in her name at the place of her rest. He will read from the play, and take questions from the audience. Copies of FORTUNE will be available, and will be signed by the playwright following the presentation.

FORTUNE is about the most unforgettable woman you have never known, the actual Rose Fortune, who was born a slave, and through a 90-year life span, became a symbol of truth, social equality, and human spirit.  In FORTUNE, 10-year old, courageous Rose refuses to accept failure as an option, no as an answer, or despair as a destiny.

This event is appropriate for adults as well as children 8 and up.  Real, simple, direct, and powerful, it is the kind of theatre that can shift thinking, wake up consciousness, and change lives meaningfully.

George is an internationally produced, award-winning author of full-length plays, screenplays, one-acts, original musicals as well as dozens of songs, and numerous monologues.  George has collaborated with New York composer Michael J. Shapiro; he is composer of Pass On The Love featured in Spike Lee’s Do It A Cappella; and he is an Addy Award winner for his work on August Wilson’s Fences.

We look forward to seeing you at Symposia Bookstore, 510 Washington Street, Hoboken, NJ.   This is a free event and light refreshments will be served.   For further details, contact Symposia at info@nullsymposia.us or at 201-963-0909.
