Did you know that burning carbon to produce electricity creates more pollution than all the cars and trucks on the road? In 1999 the Supply of Energy was deregulated in the State of New Jersey allowing consumers to choose where they buy their energy. Until recently there were few third party suppliers offering residential customers energy, but recently that has changed. Under deregulation, delivery and service of the electricity is still provided by your local utility (PSE&G). Third party suppliers are licensed by State agencies to supply electricity. The local utility, like PSEG, support the NJ Choice Program allowing you to choose your energy supplier, while continuing to provide safe delivery and service.
A company called Viridian Energy has recently emerged as the premier third party energy supplier throughout NJ, Ct, Pa and Maryland. Viridian supplies greener electricity produced from renewable and clean sources.
Viridian Energy offers two products:
1) 20% Renewable Energy product (wind and solar)
2) 100% E-Certified Renewable Energy product (100% wind).
Both products are offered at a floating price per kilowatt that is less than your current Utility. Choosing to have an electricity supplier like Viridian allows you to save money and help to save the environment, by reducing your carbon footprint. By purchasing your electricity through Viridian, you will support currently available renewable resources as well as aid in the development of new renewable resources in the U.S.
The HFA has become an “Associate of Viridian Energy”. That means that the HFA will earn money for each household that signs up to have their energy supplied by Viridian. 100% of the money that the HFA earns will support the PROJECT PLAY initiative, building a park that uses environmentally-sustainable building materials. What better way to partner our GREEN efforts with the GREEN efforts of Viridian and save money!
Making the switch is simple! There are no credit checks and no deposits. Once your application is approved you will receive a letter from PSE&G confirming that you have chosen Viridian as your third party supplier PSE&G will continue to deliver your power from the same grid directly to your home and continue to service your home or business . You will receive one bill from PSE&G. Viridian will be listed as the supplier on that bill and you make payments as you always have to PSE&G.
Join Project Play in their efforts to LIVE GREEN by spreading the word to switch to Viridian. Together we can positively impact the environment.

Mile Square Theater will be launching a new play on April 8th at 8pm called Rounding Third by Richard Dresser. They have been generous enough to donate 50% of their box office proceeds on opening night to Project Play so come out and see a great play while supporting a great cause. Mile Square Theatre is located at Monroe Theatrespace, 720 Monroe Street, 2nd Floor.
Here’s a brief synopsis of the play: For Michael and Don, two coaches of the same Little League baseball team, their answers are clear – and completely opposite. Richard Dresser’s ROUNDING THIRD is a hilarious look at how our culture is teaching our kids – and our parents – to deal with competition and success. Starring in ROUNDING THIRD is Mile Square Theatre Associate Artistic Director Matthew Lawler (The Sopranos, Knight and Day w/ Tom Cruise) and Company member Liam Joynt (Salt w/ Angelina Jolie). Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for Students/Seniors. Contact Mile Square Theatre at 201-208-7809 or milesquaretheatre.org for more information.

After enjoying a fun filled playdate at the new playground at Liberty State Park, Zabrina Stoffel and Regina Gannon had an idea. Why didn’t Hoboken have such a park? Both moms spent many days at Church Square Park and thought Hoboken should enjoy the same type of safe playground.
Gannon and Stoffel approached the City of Hoboken with their concept. Both the outgoing and incoming Director of Environmental Services met them with open arms. A green light was given to solicit draft proposals. They learned about the latest in playground design including environmentally-sustainable building materials. The City Council’s Parks and Recreation sub-committee was impressed with all their work and encouraged them to keep moving forward.
After multiple meetings with concerned parents and the community, Gannon and Stoffel learned that safer parks for Hoboken kids was a top priority. So in October 2009, The HFA launched Project Play. As active members of HFA, Stoffel and Gannon were the obvious choice to lead this initiative to rebuild ailing sections of Hoboken’s public parks, starting with one of the most urgent needs: Church Square Park.
There are three sections of Church Square Park to address: (1) the center wooden structure designated for 5-12 year olds (2) the wooden structure along 4th Street designated for 2-5 year olds and (3) the swing area along 4th Street.
HFA’s Project Play is off to a great start however there is still a long road ahead. A concept needs to be presented to City Council by the Parks and Recreation sub-committee. If there is agreement, it will be presented at a public meeting. Upon approval, a Request for Proposal (RFP) will be sent to several playground equipment providers. To fund the project, HFA’s Project Play will approach individuals, businesses, and foundations for donations as well as solicit grants. While fundraising in this economic environment is an enormous challenge, HFA is confident that Hoboken is ready. Stoffel said that “as members of an amazing community of families and friends, we saw this as an opportunity to mobilize and make a difference making Hoboken an even better place to live and raise a family.”
HFA is thrilled to kick off the effort and has made a leadership donation of $10,000 toward the goal. Here is where you, our members, can get involved. HFA’s Project Play needs marketing, further research, advertising, accounting, bake sales and most of all, your participation in the events. For more information or to volunteer, please contact
HobokenProjectPlay@gmail.com.
